Clacton Airshow Post Event Report

Essex RAYNET was pre-deployed at the Clacton Airshow on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd August on behalf of the Emergency Planning Team at Tendring District Council, to provide a resilient and secure, communications network, ready to redeploy in the event of a Major Incident being declared before/during/after the Flying Displays.

This saw us deploy a team of approx 20+ Operators on both days, clocking up over 500 hours.

As this was a during the week and during working hours deployment, we were very kindly assisted by Operators from the Counties of SW Hampshire RAYNET, Forest Heath RAYNET, East Suffolk Raynet and Mid Herts RAYNET.

We utilised a RF Network of UHF Icom Digital Voice Technology via an Inband Repeater, with a one off Icom Digital Voice Crossband Repeater from Icom UK, to provide coverage beyond the immediate area of risk.

The Technology worked flawlessly, even at a lower mast height due to strong winds, which affected the Flying Schedule dramatically on Day 1.
Day 2 was quite a bit calmer and allowed for a really good display.
Battery life was significantly improved over DMR, with very clear audio, even in the wind.

We also utilised D-Star Technology for the sending/receiving of Images of crowd density which were very slow to send using Mobile Networks which had, of course fallen over due to network overload.

I’m delighted to say that it passed without incident, which is the best result.
Thanks to everyone who took part, here’s to a bumper Airshow next year!
